I adored the opening of this episode. Nothing creepier. Having only snapshots of what happened to Dean in Hell was so on the ball. Then, you get an entirely silent first scene, when Dean's clawing his way out of his coffin and getting 'provisions' from that little store. It definitely set the right kind of mood for the season.

The 'Then, Now' montage was pretty friggin' perfect too because I had not seen too much of season 2 and 3 at the time, including the finales and premieres , and only knew so much about them. Now that I'm all caught up, season 4 is better than ever!

And let me just say that I'm glad we've finally had a real brother/brother hug this episode. That was so heartfelt... I'm sure I would bawl if I watched this episode again, now that I know the entire story behind previous seasons. Even when I watched it the first time, the brother's reunion was so well done, I was blown away. And that, my friends, is why this show is so good.
Take someone that hasn't watched this show at all ever, and show them this premiere (or of any season, really ) and their heart will be breaking for these brothers by the end of it.

You really hit the nail right on the head with my reactions to this premiere. It wasn't my first, but I def was on the edge of my seat when everything happened.

BTW, I have to say that, although having missed a bunch of episodes in both seasons 2 and 3, I still cried like a baby at that scene. Man, can those two boys act, or what?

Yeah this episode had me on the edge of my seat, too! Introducing Sam's powers along with having Castiel at the end of the episode was so exciting. And I mean, how totally bad*ss were Castiel's wings?!? It would be cool to get to see them by the end of the season.
