4x16 - "On The Head Of A Pin"

Discuss the fourth season of Supernatural

I loved this episode. I was freaked by this episode. My heart broke for this episode. And seeing as how Sam and Dean were barely in it, that's saying A LOT about the supporting characters on this show. Alistair (creep-tastic!), Castiel (who can pull off being so emotional under that blank emotionless face), Uriel (who I sadly just got REALLY intrested in this episode :( ), Anna (YAY she's back!), and Ruby (dude... cool contacts). Three minutes in, I seriously had to check the time to see that we weren't 30 minutes into the show already. And 30 minutes in, I couldn't believe we still had another 30 minutes left! From the opening scene (COOL new Impala shots.. a view behind the wheel AND the misty highway!) to the climax with Sam and Dean... and the OTHER climax with Castiel and Uriel! This episode might have had less Sam and Dean, but the scenes we did have of them were bullseye perfect and freaking intense.

B...B-but... I love Grease *tear* teeheehee

YES! She did! I was rewatching it over and over again on youtube, and it still feels so wrong to me that she would call him that! I think Ruby was fascinating this episode. That eeeevil smirk she had made me wonder if the writers are trying really hard to make us believe that she is evil, then have her be good in the end, or if it's really the other way around. I really don't know about her...

Ha ha well saving his life might have been part of it, but that scene did creep me out. Like really scared me. Dean was with Alistair for HOURS and only got him to dish out some really hilarious Monopoly jokes (and he's had 10yrs practice!), and Sam has him for a couple of seconds and BAM we have what we need AND "hay ho, the witch is dead"! You all remember the first time he met Alistair... he was barely able to (and I quote) tickle him! Plus, I'm really curious about the fact that Sam seems so sure Alistair was telling the truth when he was talking about it to Castiel. Sure we now know exactly what he has to do to enhance his powers, but there's still a lot we don't know about how far along he really is. Why was he so sure?

And I'm not crazy... I'm sure his eyes turned black in the car scene! Well, his irises anyway. That. Was. Brilliant. Our Sammy turning into a demon? :o I need to breathe.

Knightmist wrote:I was happy to get a rough idea on their numbers and the possible politics that are involved.

I love that the hiearchy of the Angels could be faulty... And that Uriel seems to have angels on his side somewhere, now. There must be angels that agreed to his proposal, unlike Castiel. I can't get over how cool that is... that Lucifer was the one who disobeyed and fell, yes, but he wasn't the only one who thought about how they were taking orders from some unknown higher authority that they can't be sure exists. Others that didn't fall with him might still see things the same way as him and acknowledge him as a leader/hero. Seeing as apparently, only 7 angels have actually seen God (I wonder if we'll ever meet any of them!), I'm curious about how many Uriel talked to about this 'rebellion' and if they are all on Earth! I'm not sure anymore if we can fully trust the orders coming from above anymore. Poor Castiel...

I guess the way Sam used his powers in this ep just made me shiver. Sure he was saving Cas (and thank God for that) but I donno. To me Sammy at the moment seems so hypicritacal.

We have always thought of Sam the one who prays and the one who always believed using powers that the angels tell him not too. If I was Dean I would start throwing punches.

And Speaking of the oldest Winchester brother, I was rewatching Jus In Bello today and the Dean there when he was talking about how he thought the world was going to end bloody but he's going to go down swinging, is so different to the Dean now.

I just hope that some how they can bring back the stronger Dean.

Those Winchester boys and now Cas just break my heart

Well, we've seen that Hell has changed Dean's character more than anything ever has in his life. It kind of got rid of that guns blazing attitude that used to prevail with Dean. Like he said, he's tired.

I also hope we see that same Dean we know and love, so someone can stop Sam from going down this terrible path.

True. Hell has changed him. I guess Hell is really Hell.
Thinking about it I think John knew the plan. If you remember in My time of dying YED says 'You know the truth about Sammy and all the children like him' and John being the know it all he is said 'Yes I have known for a while.'

John probably knew (and this is my theory) that if he went to hell he could withstand being the demonic knife sharpener. Maybe he knew if the demon who sent him there dies then he would be able to leave. Plus it also brings to sight the famous,
'Dad said if I couldnt save you, I would have to kill you.'

I personally havent thought of the line above since the end of Season 2. Maybe John knew what could very well happen now.

I have had this theory for a long time (and I've said this before on the podcast) that John knows everything on the series that we are finding about.

This theory is the reason that I wouldn't wanna see John until 5x22 (the series finale), so this theory could be totally confirmed. :)

That's definitely been done... twice! 'Metamorphosis', anyone?:

He he! I'm so proud of myself for uploading those pictures. I tried it once on another post somewhere and it failed horribly for some reason. Yay! (Alright, enough ego for now... )

But back to the point, what bothers me is that the angels haven't given Sam an actual concrete reason for why his powers are so terrible (I think I might of heard this on the podcast, not sure). All he's been doing is saving people with it (Dean and Cas now included). Despite how much it makes me cringe inside everytime he uses it, if you disregard the fact that they were given to him by a demon and that he looks pretty wicked (in both good and bad senses of the word) when he uses it, it's helped their situation more often than not. Plus, it's intresting that we've learned that there may be a kink in the angel chain of command, so any messages coming from up above might not be coming straight from the source.

The angels, unless they know about some prophesy we don't, aren't giving us a lot of facts about why what Sam is doing is wrong. Of course it's going to have it's reprecussions, and I'm sure what Pam said about it not being good for him is pretty on-the-nose, but the angels haven't exactly been all harps and haloes nor have all demons been bad to the bone (still holding out on Ruby... :? ) and as we saw in this episode (even in DTaH, when the angels couldn't help because of the anti-angel seals) angels aren't infailible and can mess up. They definitely haven't been what Sam thought he was praying to all these years.

I still wanna smack that boy upside the head, though, I do. Demon blood? From Ruby? *tsk tsk* I guess Sam can't use the 'I have Demon Blood in me' excuse anymore... he's the one ingesting it!

Ok that theory there, that John knew since the beginning about the apocalypse waaay back when... is genious! I kind of though so as well, but only since Alistair mentioned John in this episode. "Save him or kill him"... I'm surprised you can't hear me shiver from all the way over here.

The funny thing that I cant believe I havent mentioned yet is the fact that, the one thing I didnt like about this Ep is that Alistair died.
He was such a good bady. Oh well :D.

I think the angels have a problem with the method to how Sam got/and getting his powers. Ruby the Hells all you can eat buffet.

I agree with you Lovebanshee, I still dont know what to make of Ruby. Maybe in some respects she's like Sam, doing things that are questionable for a bigger picture. However I think her bigger picture will be if Lilith goes bye bye that she will be able to 'move on' like John did. After all I think Ruby is quite over looked with her demon power abilities, after all in Hell she did find the Demon Killing knife and she was able to break out of that Devils trap at the end of season 3.

Awwww, that's right! He died... for good this time! *tear*
I think the fact that he died was (to me at least) overshadowed by Sam's overly creepy use of his powers. Cuz I was freaking out right then. I keep forgetting that it wasn't JUST another hand-of-ipecac exorcism, but he actually killed Alistair dead.
