I quite enjoyed that too, I noticed the changing dynamic of all three brothers when one would slide out of the picture for a while. Like Sam would be acting like big brother to Adam (ie: in the scene where he tells him about how Dean killed the YED and they get attacked near the car) and taking control, but as soon as Dean came back, he takes the shotgun, shoots the bad guy and kind of takes over that big brother role again.
And it seems like one of the reasons Sam and Dean weren't clicking is that you have two brothers trying to be big brothers when Dean is used to little brother Sam so much (well, a lot less this season, that's for sure). They clash because (among other things) until now, Dean hasn't realized how like John Sam is and I don't think that's something he sees as a very good thing.

I believe Sam did tell him and if he didn't, I think Dean would know anyway because he presumably also knows what ghouls are and has seen both Adam and his mom's corpse knowing that he was leaving Sam alone with one back home which is why he was in such a hurry to get out and save Sammy! Which he did \o/!
